Greenway

Plans are well underway for a greenway for both walkers and cyclists along approximately 22km of unused track, which was previously the Midleton to Youghal railway  line. Greenways have proved very successful and they open up areas along the way that aren’t open now. Not alone would Midleton gain another tourism jewel in its crown if completed but villages such as Castlemartyr and Mogeely would benefit. Undeniably there would be a massive spinoff for tourism in the town and surrounding areas. Cork County Council have committed to investing almost €10 million in developing the greenway and by taking the former railway line under a lease from Irish Rail are preserving the former rail route so if the potential to redevelop the railway should occur in the future that the line is held in
public ownership.

Recreational Facilities

Several groups have spoken to me regarding the need to develop the  recreational infrastructure of the town. Two projects in particular for Midleton that have been raised with me recently are  the development of a swimming pool and of an all wheel/skate board park. These projects would offer excellent choice and facilities for those wishing to exercise and socialise across East Cork and I will work to assist those campaigning for Midleton to get its fair share of facilities to reflect the needs and size of the
community.
